Master Class There has been talk recently about a master class with Rotem Gilbertnow it’s a go! The master class will be held during the afternoon of May 31 at the home of Rayma Zack, 432 Avenida Sevilla, Unit A, Laguna Woods. The class will work this way: Individual players or ensembles may sign up for coaching sessions with Rotem, and auditors are welcome to watch the sessions. A coaching session for an individual performer or a duet is 30 minutes, and a coaching session for a larger ensemble is 45 minutes. The cost is $25 per player (e.g., the cost for a quartet is $100). Auditors pay a $10 fee. Players should bring enough copies of their music so Rotem can borrow one for reference. Slots are filling fast, but we still have room for another group or two. All levels are welcome. All Players and Auditors MUST register in advance so their names can be given to the gatekeeper at Laguna Woods; see Rayma at our May meeting or contact her ASAP: raymilt85@comline.com Directions to Rayma’s home will be available at the May 9 OCRS meeting. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the Master, Rotem Gilbert, and from listening to the other groups. Auditors will have a unique opportunity to hear musicians before and after their critiques. We hope this will be the first in a series of Master Classes with some of our favorite conductors. Welcome Out comes the welcome mat to new members Shauna S. Roberts (our talented sopranino player at the April meeting) and David A. Malueg, both from Riverside. We’re very glad to have you with us! There is much to do in Idyllwildhiking, shopping, art galleries, restaurants. Mark your calendars now! Information sheets and registration forms will be sent by separate e-mail and also will be available at the February and future meetings, or feel free to contact Matthew Ross at Matthew.Ross@jud.ca.gov or matthewkross@cox.net Shhhhhhh... Every month the newsletter features a cartoon orange saying “shhhh” and beseeching you to stay quiet during meetings. Too many of us are not paying following the request. Talking, noodling, paper shuffling, and failure to pay attention to the conductor impairs the ability of others to enjoy the meeting. So here are ten simple rules of etiquette we all should follow to make the evening more enjoyable. 1. When the President stands to start the meeting, all talking should cease. 2. NO NOODLING. Do not put your mouth on your instrument until the conductor leads the group in playing the piece. Beforehand, if you need to practice, quietly finger your part without blowing. 3. If you have a question or comment, raise your hand and wait for the conductor to acknowledge you. If the conductor does not acknowledge you, do not speak. 4. Please keep comments to a minimum. We are here to listen to what the conductor has to say. 5. Direct questions to the conductor, not the person seated next to you. 6. If you have difficulty seeing, hearing, or otherwise following the conductor, move to the front. 7. If you are not given a part, raise your hand or stand up to get the conductor’s attention. Avoid blurting out comments such as “Need more tenor parts!” or “Back here!” 8. When informed the break is over, please return to your seat immediately so we can resume playing. 9. Keep your music organized. Avoid loud page turns and paper rustling. 10. To the extent possible, keep instruments, bags, etc. underneath your seat or off to the side against a wall. These simple rules of etiquette should make the meetings more enjoyable and run more smoothly!
